Overview

Research Internship@Keio-ST is a program open to students who are currently enrolled in a graduate school of university outside of Japan, and who are majoring in science, engineering or related fields. If you wish to conduct research activities at our Graduate School of Science and Technology under supervision of our faculty members, you may study under the category as a "Research Internship@Keio-ST" student.

Eligibility

・Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate degree program (master's or doctoral) at an overseas university.

・Applicants must be a graduate student who wishes to conduct part of their research at Keio under the supervision of an academic advisor from our faculty of Science and Technology.

・Applicants must contact a prospective academic advisor and get permission from him/her to study under his/her supervision before submitting their applications.

Period of program

The research period of Research Internship@Keio-ST students can be from one month to four months. Students can flexibly plan their research periods.

Research period (the duration of research) can be extended. One month to four months will be considered as one term, if you extend your program to more than four months, you will need to pay the program fee again.

If you plan to do the research for more than four months, you can apply and pay the program fee in advance. However, if you cancel or want to change the period later, the fee will not be refunded under any circumstances.

You must belong to a(n) university/educational institution during the whole study period at Keio University. Your study period at Keio University cannot exceed the enrollment period at your home institution. Thus, if you are looking for a research internship during a gap year or after graduation, we cannot accept you as a Research Internship@Keio-ST student.

Student Status at Keio University

Successful applicants will be registered at Keio University as an International Visiting Research Student (non-regular, non-degree-seeking student). A student ID card will be issued during the registered period in Keio. Research Internship@Keio-ST students cannot attend lecture courses or receive official academic records/credits from Keio University.

Successful applicants will have access to the Keio University Media Center - one of the most renowned university libraries in Japan.

Student visa

Most non-Japanese nationals require a visa to enter Japan. It varies according to nationality and the length of stay. Student Visa is NOT mandatory for a Research Internship@Keio-ST student. In case you need a student visa to attend this program, Keio University will support you to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility for your student visa application. Accommodation

Research Internship@Keio-ST students can apply for a student dormitory if there are vacancies.

As dormitories are limited, there is a possibility that your application for dormitory will not be accepted. In such case, the applicant will have to look for alternative accommodation.

*You are required to pay the program fee after your application is accepted. We will send you the payment request together with the announcement of the results.

*Research Internship@Keio-ST students are not eligible for Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO)Scholarships. No other scholarships are available.

Insurance

Research Internship@Keio-ST students are required to buy a traveler’s insurance that covers liability, accidents, illness, etc., arranged prior to participating in the program and valid from the date of departure until the date of return.

In Japan, a national health insurance system “National Health Insurance (NHI; also known as "Kokuho")” is available to reduce medical costs. Research Internship@Keio-ST students who will be staying at Keio for more than three months are also required to join the NHI.

During the registered period at Keio University, Research Internship@Keio-ST students will automatically join an insurance plan “Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research”. This insurance plan covers students who suffer physical injury from an unexpected accident during their educational and research activities.
