In this lecture, Prof. Bruce Thomas and Dr. Ross Smith will provide an overview of their activities on Spatial Augmented Reality and Tangible Interfaces. Prof. Bruce Thomas will give an introduction to Spatial Augmented Reality techniques and industrial applications at Wearable Computer Laboratory. Spatial Augmented Reality is a technology used to augment the real environment by projecting virtual information with consideration of geometry and reflection properties. It provides seamless human-computer interactions in our daily space. Dr. Ross Smith will discuss deformable computer input device research that is being performed at the Wearable Computer Laboratory. This presentation will describe the Digital Foam sensor that allows users to squash and pinch a hand-held device, to change the shape of digital 3D models using clay sculpting inspired techniques. A history of the prototypes and future directions will be discussed. The Digital Foam sensor now holds a granted US patent and has many potential real-world applications such as medical training, entertainment and industrial design devices. Soft tangible interfaces are willing to make computer interactions that employ deformable devices that can be squashed, twisted and manipulated to create a rich set of gestures to support a new form of human-computer interaction.
