The Graduate School of Science and Technology consists of three sub-schools and each sub-school consists of several centers of learning and research.

  1. School of Fundamental Science and Technology
    • Center for Mathematics
    • Center for Physics
    • Center for Molecular Chemistry
    • Center for Applied Physics and Physico-Informatics
    • Center for Chemical Biology
    • Center for Biosciences and Informatics
  2. School of Integrated Design Engineering
    • Center for Multidisciplinary and Design Science
    • Center for System Integration Engineering
    • Center for Electronics and Electrical Engineering
    • Center for Material Design Science
  3. School of Science for Open and Environmental Systems
    • Center for Space and Environment Design Engineering
    • Center for Science of Environment and Energy
    • Center for Applied and Computational Mechanics
    • Center for Information and Computer Science
    • Center for Open Systems Management

The students will become an official member of one of the sub-schools and conduct research under the supervision of a faculty advisor who is a member of one of the centers that belong to this particular sub-school. The advisor will be a member of one of the centers, but the student while being a member of a sub-school will not belong to any specific center. This is to allow the student to develop a broad perspective that is not restricted by the framework of his advisor's center. It should be noted that once a student has become an official member of a sub-school he cannot transfer to another sub-school.

Before submitting your application, please contact your prospective research advisor to discuss your research plan thoroughly. Applicants who have failed to do this prior to submitting their applications have a much smaller chance of acceptance.
For more information on our faculty members, use "Staff Search". Please choose your prospective research advisor from among the faculty members who are qualified to be a thesis advisor.

The Graduate School of Science and Technology consists of three comparatively large-scale Schools: the School of Fundamental Science and Technology, the School of Integrated Design Engineering, and the School of Science for Open and Environmental Systems. The advantage of this organization is the interdisciplinary educational approach it makes possible. Students cross freely between different research fields based on the basic academic competency acquired in undergraduate studies. Each of the three schools thus serves as an overarching organizational unit that encompasses a broad range of fields and offers students greater latitude of choice between them. Each School has educational and research units composed of groups of faculty members called Centers. The Centers can be flexibly reorganized on a periodic basis to respond to new fields of research and social conditions. These educational and research units give students access to diverse yet highly expert advice on research and study from several faculty members. The Graduate School offers unique systems of entrance examination and curriculum. We hope potential applicants come to understand and appreciate our philosophy and system by reading through the “Emerging 2011” text (available from the middle of April at: Based on this, applicants are invited to apply for their major of interest. And we look forward to receiving these applications.
